The worst European transfers of this season

The 2022/23 season is coming close to the end, so it is time for our list of the worst transfers of the last year.

Mykhaylo Mudryk

The 22-year-old Ukrainian winger spent the first part of the season in Shakhtar Donetsk, where he was brilliant. Mudryk scored ten goals and made eight assists in 19 matches for the Ukrainian team in the domestic and the Champions League. Magnificent performances convinced Chelsea to pay 70 million euros in January, but Mudryk has been dreadful since he joined The Blues.

Indeed, he’s just added another shade of grey to a disappointing season for Chelsea. In nine Premier League matches, he has yet to score while adding only one assist so far. Due to his dribbling skills and love of using agility to beat defenders, the media have often labeled Mudryk as ‘the Ukrainian Neymar’. Yet, since arriving in London, those comparisons are looking completely wrong.

Kalvin Phillips

Kalvin Phillips had a few good seasons at Leeds before joining Manchester City. When The Citizens spent almost 50 million euros for the midfielder in July it looked like a good move. Phillips was expected to be an understudy of Rodri, especially at the start of the season, but also to play in a pair with the Spaniard.

Unfortunately, Kalvin Phillips has had a lot of problems this season. Firstly, he injured his shoulder and missed almost every game until the World Cup. Then, after playing 40 minutes for England in Qatar, he returned to Manchester City overweight – according to Pep Guardiola – so he again missed a few games.

Up until now, Phillips has played only 65 minutes in six Premier League matches. Guardiola has turned to some other players in Kalvin’s absence, so it seems that the Englishman could even leave Manchester City at the end of the current season.

Richarlison

Before joining Tottenham, Richarlison spent four seasons at Everton. For the Goodison Park club, the Brazilian attacker scored 43 goals in 135 matches. Last summer, Tottenham spent 58 million euros to sign Richarlison, but he hasn’t matched this worth so far. Richarlison has been brought in to help Harry Kane in the attack, but also to add depth at other positions like left and right wing.

The Brazilian is still goalless for Tottenham in the Premier League while, in the Champions League, he has scored two goals – not nearly enough for an attacker of his calibre.

The problem with Richarlison is that Antonio Conte mostly used him on the wing but he is much better as a pure forward. Sadly, with Kane in front of him, Richarlison will hardly reach his potential in this position at Tottenham.
