Aleksejevs v Abdulaev. IBO European title fight preview
The English national football team is highly star-studded. The team has experienced a period of renewed optimism and notable success since Gareth Southgate took over in 2016. Southgate has since focused on bringing in young talent and creating a positive team spirit under his management. So far, under him, England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the final of Euro 2020. While this feat has given some fans hope, many think he is too cautious and relies too much on defensive tactics in important matches.
While they appreciate Southgate’s efforts to improve the team and build a good atmosphere, they are desperate for a major trophy. The last time England won one was the World Cup in 1966. There are high expectations for the upcoming Euro 2024, considering the amount of prospects and skilled veterans the team has. However, Southgate once again caused surprise when he released the provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2024. There were notable names not on the list. Players like Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson were left out.
While these players haven’t actually done well in their respective clubs in the current season, there is no denying the quality they possess. It is yet to be known who will be left out when Southgate confirms his final 26-man squad, as he would have to cut out at least seven players. The upcoming days and the team’s performance in Euro 2024 in Germany will be crucial in determining Southgate’s future. While we await this outcome, let’s review the possible list of next England manager odds to know who could take over from Gareth Southgate if there should be a change.
The odds for the next England manager highly favours Mauricio Pochettino at 4/1. Pochettino, who recently left his position as Chelsea’s head coach, is eager to return to management. He is known for his high-pressing, attacking style of play with an emphasis on quick transition. His style favours young, energetic players and could bring out the best in this talented England team. Having achieved considerable success with England’s top striker, Harry Kane, during their time at Tottenham Hotspur, he would aim to rekindle that partnership to guide England to the heights their fans dream of.

Eddie Howe has done a fine job since taking over at Newcastle United. He was the former manager of Bournemouth before taking the job at St James’ Park. Eddie Howe has since done a beautiful job at Newcastle United, taking them back to the Champions League for the first time in twenty years. Unfortunately, the Magpies experienced poor form in the just-concluded 2023/24 English Premier League season, finishing 7th and missing out on European football. It’s yet to be seen what the future holds for Eddie Howe at Newcastle United. However, should there be a change, his England next manager odds are priced at 5/1, which means he’s also a favourite.

Graham Potter left Chelsea in April 2023 following a poor run of form. He’s since been without a club, and his odds of being the next England manager are currently 5/1. If we were to judge going by his stint at Chelsea, one would say many English fans wouldn’t buy the idea of him taking over from Southgate. However, no one can deny the fact that he did a brilliant job at Brighton & Hove Albion with his direct, attacking style of play.
Not many know who Lee Carsley is. He’s the manager of the England Under-21. Lee Carsley has had his stock on the rise after winning the 2023 European Under-21 Championship with England’s Under-21s. His playing style suits what the senior national team needs—an attractive style of football. Should the FA consider an in-house appointment, Lee Carsley can dream big of becoming the next England manager. With 7/1 odds of being the next England manager, no one can totally write him off.

Who wouldn’t dream of having Pep Guardiola as a manager? Pep isn’t just a serial winner; he’s a coach who wins while prioritising attractive football. He’s made history with the Cityzens, winning them their first ever UCL and also becoming the first English team to win the Premier League four times in a role. With news flying all over the media that he could quit his role as manager of Manchester City in the summer of 2025, who knows what could happen? However, with the odds of his next England football manager being 14/1, the FA would have to put in much effort to convince the Spaniard to take over from Southgate.

Jose Mourinho has always expressed his desire to manage a football national team someday. He’s currently off management after leaving Roma following a poor run of form. However, whether the FA would want to bet on a coach whose style of play is more defensive than attacking is yet to be known. His odds on the next England manager suggest he isn’t the clear favourite. However, things could change should both the FA focus more on his managerial record as a serial winner rather than his style of play.

Frank Lampard hasn’t had a successful stint as a football coach. His first attempt at Derby County in 2018 had the Rams on the verge of returning to the Premier League but lost in the play-off final to Aston Villa. He’s since had it rough when he made a hero’s return to Chelsea. Despite leading them to a fourth-place finish and an FA final in 2019/20, it wasn’t enough to boost his coaching career. It’s uncertain whether the FA would want to gamble on the young coach and build with him. However, if the FA chooses Frank Lampard, it’s likely to raise many eyebrows.
