Aleksejevs v Abdulaev. IBO European title fight preview
It is hard to list the best strikers of the last two decades and leave out Edin Dzeko. The Bosnian turned 37 in March but still plays at the highest level. Indeed, Dzeko signed a two-year contract with Turkish giants Fenerbahce a few days ago.
Edin Dzeko’s story starts in Zeljeznicar; one of the most popular clubs in Bosnia. But the striker who would later become the best scorer in his national team’s history never got the chance for his hometown team. Actually, the board was happy to sell him to Teplice for under 100k euros. A decision that will haunt Zeljeznicar forever.
During the next two decades, Edin Dzeko would become one of the most prolific strikers of the 21st century while playing for Teplice, Wolfsburg, Manchester City, AS Roma, and Inter Milan. In 738 appearances, Edin Dzeko scored 323 league goals. Also, he holds records for the most caps (129) and goals (64) for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.
During his two years at Inter Milan, the team of Giuseppe Meazza didn't win Serie A or a Champions League title. Still, Edin Dzeko helped the team win two Italian Cups and two national Super Cups.
Although Dzeko is 37 years old, in the previous season he demonstrated once again that he is still a world-class player. He finished the 2022/23 season with 14 goals in 52 matches in all competitions. Inter Milan fans will certainly remember one notable goal in the Champions League semi-final against AC Milan.
According to Turkish media reports, Dzeko will earn 4.2 million euros per season at the club from Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadyumu. After signing for Fenerbahce, Dzeko said, “Hello, Fenerbahce family. I’m so happy to be here. I’m looking forward to seeing you all.”
Also, he wrote on Instagram for all Inter Milan fans:
Goodbye Inter, it’s been two wonderful years. It has been an amazing journey. We’re parting ways now, but thank you for everything.
Last season, Fenerbahce had big ambitions coming into the season, but the team led by legendary head coach Jorge Jesus once again failed to win the Super Lig title. Eventually, the club fell eight points short of Galatasaray. The only satisfaction came in the cup, where Fenerbahce won 2-0 against Basaksehir in the final. That is the first major title for Fenerbahce since the 2014/15 season Super Cup.
After another season without the championship title, Fenerbahce decided to part ways with their head coach Jesus. In his place arrived Ismail Kartal, a legendary Turkish manager who won two Super Lig titles with Fenerbahce (in 2010/11 and 2013/14). The board hopes that Kartal and Edin Dzeko can return the club to its glory days.
