Villarreal are a team that pretty regularly finishes in the top seven in La Liga and secures Europe. However, last year, the Yellow Submarine finished eighth, missing Europe by four points. This year, they had their ups and downs, but as the season progresses, they only look better and are now 5th with 44 points - just three points away from the Champions League spots. To keep their hopes alive for the Champions League, these home games against teams from the bottom half of the league's table are a must-win.
Espanyol have constantly moved between La Liga and La Liga 2 in recent seasons. Last year, they were promoted, although through the playoffs and trying to survive this year. While they struggled through the season, they won some key games lately against other relegation candidates like Real Valladolid and Espanyol, helping them move to 15th place. They won 27 points in 25 rounds and are four points away from the danger zone. However, they will have a really challenging schedule in March as they will face mostly against the upper half of the league's table.
Villarreal vs Espanyol pick: Villarreal to win and cover the -1 AH spread
Villarreal are in very good form, having won four and drew two in the last six games while scoring 14 goals - 2.33 per game. Moreover, they lost just once during the previous nine games. To be fair, they had a relatively easy schedule, but it is still an OK record.
Espanyol are in good form, having lost just once in the last seven matches. Still, most of their good games happened at home. On the road, they were terrible as they lost nine out of 12 La Liga games - 75%. Additionally, they only scored seven goals (0.58 per game), so even scoring away from home against Villarreal will be a challenge.
In the previous h2h game, Villarreal won 2:1. Additionally, the Yellow Submarine won four h2h games in a row with a combined goal difference of 13:4. Considering the trend in the previous h2h games and Espanyol's terrible road record, we believe that Villarreal should secure a comfortable home win.

Espanyol team news
After a 1:0 win over Alaves, coach Manolo Gonzalez spoke to the media. He was delighted with a win but noted they have to hold the ball more. "We will not be calm until we are mathematically safe. Now we have to think about the next game, in Villarreal. We have to hold our horses because bad times may come," the coach added about the situation on the league's table.
The team should have no new injuries, but the ones who missed the previous should remain sidelined - Pablo Ramon, Jose Catala, Fernando Pacheco, and Jose Gragera.
Left full-back Carlos Romero will most likely be unavailable as he is on a loan deal from Villarreal.
