Valencia are part of the strongest Spanish competition for almost 40 years, but they are in danger of relegation this season as the team from Mestalla collected only 11 points in the first 16 league rounds. Currently, they are last on the table with five points fewer than safety. Valencia's only victory in the last five matches in all competition came in the cup against a lower-tier side, Ejea. On Wednesday, in the previous La Liga tie, Valencia played 1-1 on the road against Espanyol. The teams were pretty even in that game, so it is no wonder they split the points. 

After last season, in which Alaves surprisingly finished tenth on the table, this year, they are in a more realistic position with only one point more than the relegation zone. Alaves are in a terrible run of six games without a win in all competitions, and if the bad streak continues, they could soon find themself in the drop zone. In the previous match, Alaves played 1-1 at home against Athletic Bilbao. The home side was slightly better, but eventually, Eduardo Coudet's team again failed to pick up all three points.
