Benfica continues their push for silverware on Wednesday night as they face fourth-tier opposition Tirsense in the first leg of the semi-finals of the Taça de Portugal. With form, firepower, and quality all on their side, the visitors are clear favourites to put one foot in the final at Estádio Cidade de Barcelos.

Bruno Lage’s men have been ruthless in recent weeks, winning ten domestic matches in a row and scoring freely in the process. Benfica scored three goals in seven of their last ten outings, including a dominant 4:1 win against Porto on Sunday. In-form Greek forward Vangelis Pavlidis bagged a superb hat-trick to take his tally for the season to 23.

High-scoring outcomes have been frequent for the in-form visitors with four of their last five matches seeing at least four goals scored. 

Tirsense come into Wednesday’s contest having enjoyed a superb run to the TDP semi-finals for the first time in their history. However, having yet to face top-flight opposition, the step up to take on a rampant Benfica side is likely to prove far too much to handle.

Emanuel Simões’s side have been involved in some entertaining games of their own in recent weeks, with over 3.5 goals landing in each of their last three matches, including a chaotic 4:2 loss to Paredes at the weekend. 

While the underdog hosts will look to stay competitive ahead of their big day out in Lisbon, their defence is unlikely to hold up against Benfica’s relentless forward line.

With Benfica’s attacking unit firing and a place in the final on the line, this should be a high-scoring, one-sided contest, with the in-form visitors tipped to take a high-scoring win back to Lisbon. 

Given the gap between these sides, it's hard to see past Benfica securing another simple win on Wednesday. I'm backing Lage’s side to emerge as comfortable winners. 

An away win with over 3.5 goals scored is my best bet at Estádio Cidade de Barcelos.
