  • Competition: Olympic Games Women, Quarter-Finals
  • Date: Saturday, 3rd August, 2024
  • Kickoff: 16:00 UK / 17:00 CEST
  • Venue: Parc Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon)

On Saturday afternoon, one of the primary candidates for gold, Spain W, will face off against Colombia W in the Quarterfinals of the Women's Olympic Games football tournament. The game will take place at Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon.

Spain's women's national team is on the rise, and most football pundits rightfully consider this generation the golden one. Last year, in Australia and New Zealand, Spain won their first major trophy by winning the World Cup, and they continued with great results as they won the Nations League competition as well. Now, in their first Olympic Games appearance, they are the primary candidate (along with the USA W) for the golden medal. In the group phase, they won all nine points, and even though they weren't as efficient as they were in the previous tournaments, they heavily outplayed Japan W, Nigeria W, and Brazil W and are the favorites in this match for a reason.

Colombia W are playing in their third Olympic Games. This year, they already made history by reaching the Quarterfinals for the first time. However, Colombia's group phase performance was far from impressive. They won just three points in three games but eventually secured a spot in the quarterfinals as the best third-placed team in the tournament. The bookies see Colombia W as the weakest team in the Quarterfinals, offering odds around 32 for them to win the title, while Spain W have the odds of only 2.5.

Spain W vs Colombia W pick: Under 2.5 goals

Spain won all three games in the Olympics but scored "only" five goals, which is pretty low for their standards. They have the possession and generate chances, but they simply aren't as clinical as expected. Against Brazil, despite having a player more for the entire half, they only won by 2:0 while scoring their second goal in the stoppage time. Against Nigeria, they won only by 1:0, with a goal in the 85th minute. It seems that teams found some success in defending against them, and we believe Colombia will come out with a very defensive-orientated formation.

Additionally, both teams were under 2.5 goals in two of three games in the Olympics. Even though we expect Spain W to win, we are not convinced they can cover the -1.5/2 AH spread since they failed to do it against Japan W and Nigeria W as well. They only did it against Brazil when they had one player more. However, it was a goalless draw before that red card in the 45th minute.

Considering all the above, we believe that an under 2.5 goals bet could be the best option for this Quarterfinals game.

Spain W team news

Despite winning all three games, the team has some disagreements. Jenifer Hermoso, the team's best striker in recent years, complained about the lack of minutes she got. In the first two games, she played only 23 minutes, and the striker openly criticized coach Montserrat Tome. The striker eventually started against Brazil, but Spain had already secured the quarterfinals before that match. Now, it will be interesting to see whether she will start again or the coach will opt for Salma Paralluelo as in the first two games.
