A place in the EFL Cup semi-final will be at stake when Southampton welcome Arne Slot's Liverpool to St Mary's on Wednesday.
Southampton have not enjoyed the return to the Premier League they would have liked after beating Leeds in the play-off final to secure promotion at the end of last season. The Saints are currently the worst team in the English top flight, having won just one and lost 13 of their 16 matches so far. Russell Martin's side last faced Tottenham in the league and conceded five goals. They also shipped five against Chelsea over a week ago.
Liverpool meanwhile are playing some of the best football in the Premier League [if not the world]. Arne Slot's side have won just one of their last three games in all competitions, but even then they have been free-flowing in the final third. A case in point was last weekend's Premier League clash with Fulham at Anfield, where they twice came from a goal down and a man down to draw 2-2.
Southampton vs Liverpool Betting Tips: Liverpool to win & Over 2.5 goals
While Liverpool boss Arne Slot is expected to make changes ahead of this weekend's big Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur, the Reds are a good side capable of beating any side on their day and I expect them to get the better of Southampton.
The Reds have a good record against Southampton, having won all but one of the last seven meetings. Most of those encounters provided entertainment. In fact, four of those encounters produced four or more goals, while only one ended with fewer than three.
- Best Tip: Over 2.5 goals
- Southampton vs Liverpool prediction: 1-3

Southampton team news
Southampton head coach Russell Martin will be without the services of Jack Stephens on Wednesday due to a suspension.
Having been red carded twice this season, Stephens is set to serve the third of his four match ban for the dismissal against Chelsea in the Premier League over ten days ago.
The hosts’ absentee list also includes Gavin Bazunu, Will Smallbone, Aaron Ramsdale and Jan Bednarek who are dealing with respective injuries.

Liverpool team news
Andrew Robertson will be unavailable to Liverpool head coach Arne Slot on Wednesday due to a suspension.
Robertson is suspended after the straight red card against Fulham in the Premier League last time out, but Diogo Jota celebrated his return from injury with a goal on Saturday afternoon.
The trip to the St. Mary's Stadium on Wednesday will come too soon for Ibrahima Konaté and Conor Bradley due to knee and hamstring injuries, respectively.

- Southampton failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last six matches.
- All but one of the last six home games of the Saints produced at least four goals.
- Over 3.5 goals were seen in three of the last four away games of Liverpool.
