Schalke 04 are one of the greatest clubs in Germany but have had a difficult several years. They were either in the lower part of the Bundesliga or in 2. Bundesliga. Last year, after getting relegated, they were nowhere close to securing a return to Bundesliga as they finished tenth in 2. Bundesliga. This year, they are even worse as they are in 13th place, much closer to the relegation zone than the top three spots. Right now, they are only two points away from the 16th place and a relegation playout spot.
Kaiserslautern are also one of the big clubs in Germany that have had difficult years behind them. After accumulating debt, they fell into the third tier and even filed for bankruptcy. Since returning from 3. Liga, they were a mid-table team in the following two seasons in 2. Bundesliga. This year, they had their ups and downs but consolidated recently and are looking good with a five-game unbeaten run. Right now, they are in 9th place with 20 points, only two points away from the 3rd spot, which leads to the playoff.
Schalke vs Kaiserslautern pick: Over 2.5 goals
Schalke are struggling this season. But at home, we have constantly seen them playing high-scoring games, as they were over 2.5 goals in five out of six games with an incredible average of 5.2 goals per game! While their offense has been good with 16 scored goals, keeping a clean sheet seems like an impossible task, as they only had one in those six home games.
Kaiserslautern are in form and currently on a five-game unbeaten run. They managed to score 13 goals during that period - 2.6 per game, but they have also struggled to keep a clean sheet lately, as they had only one in the last seven matches in all competitions.
Last season, both h2h games finished with three or more goals. Considering all the above, we expect a high-scoring game, most likely with both teams scoring.

Boris Tomiak served his one-game suspension in the previous game against Braunschweig and will be available. He is the team's key central defender, and his return will surely be a factor in this game.
