This season promises another exciting fight for the title. Sporting, Benfica and Porto will once again compete for the championship. Braga are the fourth favourites at 11.00, but we can't really see them deep into the title race.

Porto are the favourites to lift the trophy once again for a reason. Under the 37-year-old Francesco Farioli, the Dragons had the best defence during last campaign and were the most stable team. Porto managed to keep all their leaders and strengthened the squad with some high-level newcomers. Most notably, they've purchased defender Jakub Kiwior from Arsenal for €17 million, while also signing midfielder In-Beom Hwang from Feyenoord.

Sporting, coached by Rui Borges, were the biggest sellers of the three, as midfielder Morten Hjulmand and forward Francisco Trincão were sold for €40 million each. The Lions acquired midfielders Silas Andersen, Sergi Altimira, Issa Doumbia and Pedro Lima, as well as the defender Ibrahima Ba. Such a migration in the middle of the pitch is never a good sign, as all these players will need time to settle in.

Finally, Benfica replaced José Mourinho with Marco Silva, who worked at Fulham for the past five years. His last experience in Portugal was more than 10 years ago, and while he is a great coach, you'd think he also requires time to adapt. The biggest signings for the Eagles are midfielders Georgiy Sudakov, Enzo Barrenechea and Jakub Kaminski, but, once again, the central line doesn't have the ideal understanding just yet.

Our analysts lean towards Porto for all the reasons mentioned above. Farioli doesn't need to build the team from scratch, unlike his counterparts. His squad looks very solid and experienced, and that should be the key to winning another title.

Prediction: Porto to defend their crown.

The Liga Portugal relegation battle looks very unpredictable. While the traditional giants should once again dominate the top end of the table, several clubs will be locked in a tense fight for survival from the opening weeks. Every point will matter, particularly in head-to-head clashes between relegation rivals, where momentum can change dramatically.

Académico de Viseu and Maritimo will need luck on their side to stay in the top tier; Casa Pia will be trying to survive once again. At the same time, Estrela da Amadora, Nacional and Santa Clara are not safe either.

Prediction: We tip Académico de Viseu and Nacional to be relegated, while Estrela da Amadora will face the relegation play-offs.

The Primeira Liga season takes place from August 2026 to May 2027, with 18 teams playing 306 matches to decide the title, European spots and relegation.

• 1st place becomes the champion and qualifies directly for the league phase of the UEFA Champions League.
• 2nd place earns the spot in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League as well.
• 3rd place enters the UEFA Champions League from the third qualifying round.
• 4th place will play in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.
• 5th place will take part in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League.
• 16th place takes part in the play-offs against the third-placed team from the second division to avoid relegation.
• 17th and 18th places are relegated automatically.

Portugal also has two main cup competitions. The Taça de Portugal, the national cup, offers a place in the Europa League. The Taça da Liga, Allianz Cup, is the League Cup, with no European spot. Another key trophy is the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, played at the start of the season between the league champions and the Portuguese Cup holders.

In the 2025/26 season, Maritimo and Académico de Viseu earned promotion to the top tier, while Casa Pia finished 16th but won the relegation play-offs to stay in the elite. All three sit at 301.00 to win the national league in 2026/27.
