  • Competition: Carabao Cup, 1/8 Finals
  • Date: Wednesday, 30th October, 2024
  • Kickoff: 19:45 UK / 20:45 CET
  • Venue: Deepdale (Preston)

On Wednesday evening, a Championship side, Preston, will welcome the Premier League team, Arsenal, in the 1/8 Finals of the Carabao Cup at Deepdale in Preston.

Preston are playing their tenth consecutive season in the Championship, where they have been mainly in the middle of the league's table. This year, the Lilywhites had a really poor start to the season as they are in 16th with 14 points in 12 rounds. Yet, as the season progresses, they are looking better and better and are currently on a five-game unbeaten run. Still, in the Carabao Cup, the Lilywhites had an impressive run so far, beating the best team in the Championship, Sunderland, and one Premier League team, Fulham.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have been the second-best team in England in the last two seasons and looks like one of the best teams in England this season as well. Currently, they are in 3rd place in the Premier League - five away from the first-placed Manchester City. In the Champions League, the Gunners are doing well, as they won seven points in nine rounds. Meanwhile, in the Carabao Cup, Arsenal was super lucky and probably got the easiest opponent in the 1/8 Finals. We expect they will rotate the squad as they did in the previous Carabao Cup against Bolton.

Preston vs Arsenal pick: Over 2.5 goals

Preston had their ups and downs over the course of the season, but they were solid lately. They haven't lost in the last five games and have scored nine goals during the period - 1.8 per game. So, we could see at least a goal against Arsenal's rotated squad.

Arsenal definitely have the potential to score two or three goals against most teams in the Premier League, let alone the Championship. They have scored two or more goals in six out of the last eight games and faced much better opponents than Preston.

The Gunners are undoubtedly a much better team, but since we are not sure how much Arteta will rotate, we are hesitant to take a -1.5/2 AH bet. Instead, we believe that an over 2.5 goals bet should be the safest option for this Carabao Cup tie.

Arsenal team news

After a 2:2 draw against Liverpool, coach Mikel Arteta spoke to the media. He said they deserved a win and that they were a better team. "We missed some opportunities where we should have scored. We created a lot of chances, but we needed more courage in that initial phase," the coach added.

Gabriel suffered an injury against Liverpool and had to leave the field after 54 minutes. It is a massive blow for the Gunners, especially since Arteta already has several important players sidelined with injuries - Riccardo Calafiori, Martin Odegaard, Kieran Tierney, and Takehiro Tomiyasu.
