A place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 is up for grabs at Frankfurt Arena on Monday evening as Portugal take on Slovenia.

Portugal come into Monday's tie as odds-on favourites to secure a place in the final eight, despite a shock 2:0 defeat against Georgia in their final group fixture. 

Over the past 18 months, Portugal have built up an excellent winning record under Spanish boss Roberto Martinez. Since March 2023, the Portuguese won 15 and lost three of 18 international fixtures.

Still, despite those wins, there remains plenty of question marks against this Portuguese team. However, while the Georgia defeat did not go down well in Lisbon, it would be unwise to read too much into that defeat, with several of Portugal's best players missing for the defeat at Arena AufSchalke on Wednesday. 

Slovenia secured their place in the round of sixteen by securing consecutive draws against Denmark, England and Serbia. Matjaž Kek´s side showed they are not to be under-estimated, and having lost just two of their last 24 matches, will be confident of testing Portugal on Monday.

A tough match to call, goal markets are not particularly appealing, while Portugal look too short to win in 90 minutes. Instead, I´ll take a chance on the tough-to-beat Slovenians in the handicap markets. I expect Kek´s men to put everything into this tie, and as they showed in the group phase, they are a tough side to break down. 

Portugal should still be expected to prevail, but a keenly fought 90 minutes is on the cards, and I´m backing Slovenia to push their illustrious rivals all the way in Frankfurt.
