- Date: Tuesday, 17th, December 2024
- Kickoff: 19:00 UK / 20.00 CET
- Venue: Weston Homes Stadium (Peterborough)
In the fight for a spot in the EFL Trophy’s last-16, Peterborough United will welcome League One counterparts Northampton Town to Weston Homes Stadium for a Tuesday night clash.
After a three-game losing streak in League One, Peterborough United ended their slump in spectaular fashion by emerging victorious in a seven-goal thriller over Crawley over the weekend, reigniting their top-seven pursuit. Before embarking on their final trio of league games for the year, the Posh will be eager to get their EFL Trophy title defense off to a strong start in the knockout stages, having previously stormed through the group stages with a maximum record of three wins from three matches.
On the other hand, Northampton Town tasted the sharp bitterness in their weekend clash, as they were completely blown away 0-3 by Rotherham United away from home, leaving them just two points above the dreaded dotted line. While their recent showings may leave room for worry, the Cobblers can hold their heads high knowing that they managed to progress from the group phase in the EFL Trophy for the first time in four seasons, picking up six points from a possible nine to finish second.
Peterboroug vs Northampton Betting Tips: PETERBOROUGH TO WIN
As the previous season's EFL Trophy champions, Peterborough will be confident in kicking off their title defense in the knockout rounds in fine fashion, drawing strength from their impressive home record where they've won eight of their last 11 matches at London Road. It seems that the defending champions should have little trouble overcoming the first hurdle, as their opponents, Northampton, are currently mired in a tough patch, having won only one of their last seven competitive matches. What’s even more troubling is that the Cobblers have struggled to create any meaningful threat in the final third, scoring blanks in four of their last six matches, and they haven’t tasted an away victory in almost two months (D3 L4). It's also impossible to ignore that Peterborough has turned Northampton's visits to London Road into a true nightmare, having outplayed them in all but one of the last five H2H matches, so we believe the Posh have everything they need to secure a win and seal their spot in the top 16 of the competition.

Northampton Town team news
Recognizing the significance of Tuesday’s match, coach Kelvin Thomas is expected to name a much stronger lineup compared to the one that suffered a 2-5 defeat against Burton on the final day of the EFL Trophy group stage.
However, the Cobblers will be without Luke Mbete (hamstring), Patrick Brough (broken leg), Ali Koiki (muscle injury), and Callum Morton, who will be sidelined for the rest of the 2024-25 season due to a severe ligament injury.
