A Nations League quarter-final first leg takes place on Thursday night when the Netherlands host Spain.

The Netherlands booked their place in the quarter-finals by finishing second in League A Group 3, while the visitors finished top of Group A with 16 points from a possible 18.

Virgil van Dijk and Co have been inconsistent in recent months. Ronald Koeman's side managed just one win in their last five matches, losing once and playing out four draws. But the Flying Dutchmen will be buoyed by the fact that their only win in that time came on home soil, when they thrashed Hungary 4-0 on Matchday 5 of the group stage.

Almost everything has gone the way of the Spaniards in the last 12 months. The Red Fury were on an eight-match winning streak prior to their Euro final triumph in July, and go into Thursday's game on a five-match winning streak.

Netherlands vs Spain Betting Tips: Over 2.5 goals

Ronald Koeman's side's last match in November ended in a 1-1 draw, but the Oranje have produced some very entertaining football at home in recent times. They scored eleven goals in their last three matches alone, with each of the last six games ending with more than three goals.

No one needs to be reminded of Spain's attacking prowess, as the Red Fury have scored two or more goals in four of their last five matches. Three of those encounters produced more than three goals and I expect a similar outcome this week.

  • Best Tip: Over 2.5 goals
  • Netherlands vs Spain prediction: 1-2

Three reasons we expect at least three goals in this game

  1. Eight of Spain's last ten matches ended with 3 goals or more.
  2. Each of the Netherlands' last six home games ended with more than 2.5 goals scored.
  3. The Netherlands have kept a clean sheet in just one of their last six Nations League games.
