  • Competition: France - Ligue 1
  • Date: Sunday, 8th, December 2024
  • Kickoff: 16:00 UK / 17.00 CET
  • Venue: Stade de la Beaujoire (Nantes)

Second-from-bottom Nantes will aim to escape the relegation zone as they host Rennes at Stade de la Beaujoire in round 14 of Ligue 1 on Sunday.

Nantes made an unexpectedly good start in the French top flight, picking up seven out of a possible nine points from their opening trio of matches, but since then, their campaign has come to a complete halt, and it seems there's still no end in sight to their struggles. The latest league outing sees Les Canaris stretching their rotten winless streak to 10 matches (D4 L6), but they can at least take some pride and solace in holding three-time reigning national champions Paris Saint-Germain to a 1-1 draw, staying just two points from safety.

Standing in their way is Stade Rennais, who last Saturday delivered their best performance of the season, smashing faltering Saint-Etienne 5-0, and in doing so, they masterfully put an end to a tough three-match losing sequence. Overall, Les Rouge et Noirs can’t be pleased with their 2024-25 campaign so far, as their unimpressive 14-point haul from 13 top-flight matches marks their poorest Ligue 1 start since the 2002-23 season when they only managed nine points by this stage.

Nantes vs Rennes Betting Tips: BTTS

It's crystal clear that neither team has much to boast about in terms of their league results to date, but with both desperately needing a win, we're hoping the crowd at Stade de la Beaujoire will enjoy an exciting match with goals flying in both directoions. Although they possess good attacking skills capable of threatening anyone, as shown last Saturday against PSG, defensive weaknesses have often held Nantes back and cost them valuable points.

The defense od Les Canaris, which has been breached in each of the last 11 straight matches, will likely be tested again, this time by Rennes, who have put exactly three goals in Nantes' net in three of the last four H2H matches. However, the red-and-black-clad side has been abysmal on the road this season, as they not only failed to win any of their first six away games but also conceded over two goals per match, totaling 14 so far. Seeing that both teams are highly vulnerable at the back, combined with their strong need for a win, we’re confident that these two battling sides will bring us entertaining football full of goals.

Nantes team news

Nantes head coach Antoine Kombouare will be without Zimbabwean striker Tino Kadewere, who is recovering from a leg injury, while center-back Jean-Charles Castelletto remains a doubt after picking up a late knock against PSG last week.

Having joined from Randers earlier this summer, Patrik Carlgren handled the pressure brilliantly in his debut against the French champions, making him a strong contender to keep his place in goal.

Rennes team news

Rennes will visit Nantes at full strength, with the only absentee being Ghanaian defender Alidu Seidu, who is sidelined for several months following a serious left knee injury sustained against Lille in matchweek 12.

Head coach Jorge Sampaoli is expected to name almost the same starting XI that stormed to a dominant 5-0 win over struggling Saint-Etienne last weekend, with Arnaud Kalimuendo marking the match with a hat-trick.
