After struggling in their return to the top tier last weekend, NAC Breda are in dire need of an improved performance this weekend.
The Pearl of the South finally secured their spot in the Eredivisie after a bizarre end to the 2024-25 Eerste Divisie campaign, where they finished eighth and lost 12 games but managed to clinch promotion via the playoffs. However, NAC´s return to the top flight was less than ideal, as they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Groningen, finding themselves three goals down within just 31 minutes.
Historically, NAC Breda has struggled against Ajax, losing the last four Eredivisie meetings between the sides by an aggregate score of 19-1. Ajax, despite finishing in their lowest Eredivisie position since the 1999-00 season last year, have shown signs of improvement under new head coach Francesco Farioli.
A strong pre-season campaign saw Ajax win eight successive matches including a narrow 1-0 win over Heerenveen last weekend before a dramatic penalty shootout victory against Panathinaikos (after a 1-0 defeat on the night) in the Europa League on Thursday.
Given Ajax’s superior quality, decent early-season form and historical dominance over NAC Breda, I expect the visitors to secure victory on Sunday.
