Montpellier will be looking to keep alive their hopes of remaining in the French top flight at least for one more season when they welcome Lyon to Stade de la Mosson this weekend.
The hosts are very close to their first relegation in more than two decades. Jean-Louis Gasset's side finished 12th in each of the last two seasons, six places above the bottom three, but they are currently well off the pace. Indeed, Montpellier have just four wins from 21 games this term and that has led to them languishing at the foot of the table.
Lyon, meanwhile, sit in the top six and are separated from the top three by just two points. They could be in a much better position were it not for their inconsistency. Paulo Fonseca's side showed just how good they can be on their day last weekend when they crushed Reims 4-0 to end a seven-match unbeaten run. Having won each of their last two meetings with Montpellier, they will fancy their chances of registering back to back wins for the first time in more than a month on Sunday.
Montpellier vs Lyon Betting Tips: Over 2.5 goals
The major reason Montpellier are at the bottom of the standing is their defence. La Paillade are yet to keep a clean sheet in all competitions this season and shipped four goals against Championnat National 2 side Le Puy Foot 43 Auvergne in the French cup a few weeks ago.
Meetings between Lyon and Montpellier are also known for being very entertaining. All but one of the last six ended with three or more goals and I fancy Sunday’s game to end similarly.
