Leeds lost their Premier League status in 2023 and certainly expected to return to the best English competition in the previous season. However, the Whites finished third on the table and failed to win promotion through the playoffs. Leeds' primary ambition for the 2024/25 season is to finish among the two best Championship teams.
Leeds had, on paper, one of the easiest opponents in the first league round, but they played 3-3 at home against Portsmouth. Leeds were a heavy favorite for all three points but was close to losing all of them late in the second half. However, Brendan Aaronson scored in the stoppage time and salvaged one point.
Middlesbrough's last season in the Premier League was 2016/17, and although their goal remains to find a place at least in the promotion playoff, it seems that there are too many Championship squads in front of them. However, Middlesbrough had an almost perfect preseason, and that is something the team will try to build on.
Middlesbrough also had an interesting tie in the first Championship round when they met with Swansea at Riverside Stadium and secured a 1-0 victory. The home finished the match with 16 shots on the goal, more than the opponent, so their win was well deserved.
Leeds vs Middlesbrough pick: Both teams to score - yes
Leeds scored eight goals in the last three matches, including preseason. On the other hand, Middlesbrough scored at least one goal in five of the previous six games. Both teams to score - yes should be the best bet for this tie.

Leeds team news
After a draw against Portsmouth in the opening round, Leeds' head coach Daniel Farke was disappointed. He said, "In many spells, it was a pretty dominant performance. But it's also a sign that, in this league, you always have to be switched on. Small situations can change the whole game. When we conceded the third goal in the 92nd minute, normally, you lose such a game. What we showed then, again, the mentality to come back was great. So in these terms, I'm really happy and pleased with how they reacted to this adversity, to equalize two times, the second time after conceding in the 92nd minute."

Middlesbrough team news
Middlesbrough started the season with a 1-0 win against Swansea, and the head coach Michael Carrick was pleased. After the game, he said, "I'm really pleased. I thought the discipline and the attitude of the players to stick to the plan and not get frustrated and cut off certain spaces was excellent. The amount of chances we had, we could have made it a lot easier for ourselves."
