Following a five-year run in Germany´s top flight, FC Koln return to Bundesliga II this weekend as they kick-off their campaign against sleeping giants Hamburg. 

Since their relegation, Timo Schultz´s side have enjoyed an excellent pre-season campaign, remaining unbeaten from six games played. An impressive run of five victories with one draw, including wins against Udinese and Swansea, will have given the Billy Goats plenty of confidence as they look for an immediate rebound to the Bundesliga. 

Scoring for fun, Koln netted 20 goals in their six unbeaten pre-season contests, while they have scored two goals or more in six of their last eight home matches played since March. 

Hamburger come into Friday's contest in less impressive form, having failed to win their last two pre-season matchups. After three successive high-scoring wins against lower league opposition, the Red Shorts have since suffered a 3:0 defeat against Cardiff before a 0:0 draw with Aris Limassol. 

A disappointing end to their Bundesliga II campaign last season saw Hamburg narrowly miss out on a long-awaited return to the Bundesliga. A poor run, which saw them win just one of their last six away fixtures proved costly for SteffenLast nameBaumgart´s side. 

While it´s often unwise to make too many assumptions based on pre-season form, Koln look well-placed to kick-off their promotion bid with a vital win on Friday.
