Barcelona is set to conclude their pre-season campaign by taking on the French side Monaco in a battle for the Joan Gamper Trophy at their temporary home, Estadi de Montjuic, on Monday evening.

This summer, the Catalan giants took part in four friendly matches, and the newly appointed boss Hansi Flick can be pleased with his team's efforts as they managed to come out on top in three of those encounters. Their otherwise impressive pre-season campaign was marred only by a penalty shootout loss to AC Milan in their most recent game, after securing three straight wins, starting with a victory over Olot and then outshining both the Premier League and La Liga champions, Man City and Real Madrid.

Unlike the Catalan side, Monaco have been involved in more warm-up matches, but their performances leave much to be desired, as the 3-1 thrashing of Feyenoord on July 31 stands as the only success for Adi Hütter’s men out of six friendly outings. It seems their win against the last season's Eredivisie runners-up didn’t enhance their confidence but instead threw them off balance, with just four days later witnessing their third preseason loss resulting from a tight 1-2 defeat to Serie A outfit Genoa.

The current scenario suggests that Flick's giants are more likely to emerge victorious in Monday's clash against the inconsistent Monaco who seem incapable of causing problems on Catalan soil, primarily due to their dismal preseason form. Since its inception in 1966, Barcelona has been hosting the Johan Gamper Trophy and boasts an impressive record of 46 wins from 58 appearances, with one of those coming last year when they put Tottenham Hotspur to the sword in a 4-2 victory. 

The two sides will renew their rivalry after a full three decades, with Blaugrana holding the advantage in H2Hs, having netted three unanswered goals across two group-stage clashes in the 1993-94 Champions League against Monaco. Although this event is taking place away from their usual Camp Nou home, it doesn’t change the fact that Blaugrana will enjoy the majority of fan support in the stands, so we hope that Flick’s men will find a way to emerge victorious and boost their confidence before a tough trip to Mestalla next week for the opening La Liga fixture.
