The Estádio Cívitas Metropolitano is the host for a compelling Champions League contest on Wednesday as Atletico Madrid takes on city rivals Real Madrid.

Last week´s dramatic first-leg encounter showcased the attacking firepower on both sides, with Brahim Diaz scoring a late Real Madrid winner after spectacular goals from Rodrygo and Julian Alvarez.

Now in possession of  a 2:1 lead from the first leg, Real are favourites to progress to the next phase, but Atletico’s home form and history in UCL knockout ties suggest we should be in for a cracking contest this week. Diego Simeone´s side boast a superb home record in this competition, remaining unbeaten in 18 knockout fixtures since 1997. 

While dominant at the Metropolitano, Atletico are not quite the defensive unit as they were in seasons gone by. The hosts saw BTTS in eight of their last ten home continental fixtures.

Recent battles with Real have also proven entertaining with each of their last ten encounters, including last week´s first leg, seeing both teams get on the scoresheet.

Real Madrid are the kings of the Champions League, and history suggests they rarely let a first-leg lead slip, having progressed in 21 of their last 22 knockout ties when winning the opening match. 

Carlo Ancelotti’s side come into this clash with a strong away record but have struggled at the Metropolitano in recent years, winning just three of their last 17 visits. 

A narrow 2:1 win over Rayo Vallecano at the weekend saw them level on points with Barcelona at the top of La Liga, but defensive fragilities remain, both domestically and in European competition. Los Merengues failed to keep a clean sheet in ten of their last 11 UCL matches. As a consequence, eight of those games finished with  both teams scoring. 

With the tie delicately balanced, another action-packed contest is on the cards. BTTS is my top pick, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Atletico Madrid fight back to force extra time.
