After a goalless first-leg at Ibrox, Athletic Bilbao and Rangers meet at San Mames Barria on Thursday with a place in the Europa League semi-finals up for grabs.

Spanish hosts Athletic Bilbao will be keen to maintain winning momentum when they take on Rangers in a potentially dramatic Europa League quarter-final showdown. 

Bilbao will have been frustrated to have been held to a goalless first leg, with the Gers reduced to ten men after just 12 minutes following the harsh dismissal of Robin Propper. Les Leones then missed a softly-awarded VAR spòt kick as the Gers held on for a well-deserved draw.

After a run of three consecutive goalless draws, including last week´s first-leg in Glasgow, Ernesto Valverde´s men returned to winning form with a 3:1 success against Rayo on Sunday. Oihan Sancet´s brace secured only a third win in nine for Les Leones.

A solid home record explains Bilbao´s short odds to claim victory on Thursday. Los Leones are unbeaten in 18 of 20 matches played at San Mames since last September. However, Bilbao have failed to win five of their ten most recent games played in front of their own support. 

Rangers return to Spain almost three years since their agonising defeat in the final of this competition in Sevilla. While much of that side has been broken up, Rangers remain a force to be reckoned with at this level. The Gers are unbeaten in seven of their last eight away UEL games, including an impressive 3:1 win against Fenerbahce in the round of sixteen.

On the road, the Gers rarely fail to deliver in the entertainment stakes. Each of their last 12 away fixtures saw both teams scoring, with over three goals scored in all but one of those games, including their 2:2 comeback draw at Aberdeen on Sunday.

In this competition, Rangers have only failed to net in one of their last ten games away from Ibrox, and despite their underdog status, will fancy their chances of upsetting the odds on Thursday. 

While Bilbao are justified favourites, Rangers cannot be written-off, and with that in mind, I´m confident both teams will score at San Mamés Barria.
