  • Competition: Champions League
  • Date: Thursday, 19th September, 2024
  • Kickoff: 20:00 UK / 21:00 CEST
  • Venue: Gewiss Stadium (Bergamo)

On Thursday evening, last season's Europa League winners, Atalanta, will face off against the Premier League vice-champions, Arsenal, in the first round of the Champions League at Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.

Atalanta became one of the best Italian teams in recent seasons. Last year was truly a historic one as they won their second major trophy by beating Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League Finals. La Dea waited 61 years for a trophy, as they won their first trophy (Italian Cup) in the 1962/63 season! They did have some changes in the squad over the Summer, but our impression is that they are around the same level as last season. Still, in the first four games in Italy, they were inconsistent, winning two and losing two games so far.

For the second year in a row, Arsenal was close to winning the Premier League title. Last year, they missed it by only two points, but they further improved the squad over the Summer, and football pundits have big expectations from them. Despite injuries and suspensions this year, the Gunners started the season well, winning ten points in the first four games. Before the start of the Champions League, the bookies see them as the third favorite to win the UCL title, only behind Manchester City and Real Madrid.

Atalanta vs Arsenal pick: Arsenal to win

Atalanta won two and lost two games this year in Serie A, but were pretty good offensively in most games. However, against Inter, they were totally outplayed as Nerazzurri hammered them 4:0. Also, Real Madrid outplayed them (2:0) in the UEFA Super Cup. It is evident they struggle against the very best teams in Europe, and we believe that will be the case with the Gunners as well.

On the other hand, Arsenal did great, winning three of four games while allowing only one goal so far! They only failed to win and allowed a goal against Brighton (1:1). However, a massive reason for that was Declan Rice's red card in the 49th minute. Before that red card, the Gunners dominated the match and had a 1:0 lead. So, if it wasn't for Rice's red card, we would probably speak about a four-game winning streak and possibly zero conceded goals.

We expect a really close match in Bergamo, but considering all the above, we believe that Arsenal are slightly closer to winning the upcoming Champions League tie.

Atalanta team news

The team has injury problems at the back, considering three center-backs, Giorgio Scalavini, Ben Godfrey, and Rafael Toloi, are ruled out. Luckily, Atalanta has many options at the back, and we should see Isak Hien, Berat Djimsiti, and Sead Kolasinac as the starting trio at the back. Besides those defenders, Gianluca Scamacca is also out with an ACL injury and will be sidelined for a long time - probably until April 2025.

Before the Arsenal game, coach Gian Piero Gasperini spoke to the media. He said this match would be a great test for his team to see how well they would respond to Arsenal's intensity, quality, and pace. "It's not just their aerial power, the way they run, move the ball and have fantastic dynamism, the coach added.

Arsenal team news

Arsenal are also having massive injury problems. Mikel Merino, Martin Odegaard, Riccardo Calafiori, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Kieran Tierney are all ruled out. On the other hand, the Italian media are reporting that Takehiro Tomiyasu, who missed all games this season with a knee injury, could recover on time for the Atalanta game.

Additionally, Bukayo Saka suffered an injury a few minutes before the end of their previous game against Tottenham. Still, according to credible sources, the injury shouldn't be too serious, and the young winger should be ready for the upcoming match.
